For the second year running records fell at the Saltwell Harriers Fell Race. This race continues to attract new converts and a record entry of 85 set off for the summit of Collier Law. Leading the field through the heather clad fell was junior international Nick Swinburn a previous winner of this race when he was a mere 17 years old. Nick remained in the lead throughout the race and even managed an extra burst of energy when he was told by a spectator with 100 metres to go that the course record was within his grasp. The extra effort paid off and Nick smashed 30 seconds off John Larkin’s 1996 record, a tremendous performance by Nick who is developing into very good athlete.

It was pleasing to see 6 under 40’s in the top ten with another youngster!! Will Horsley securing the runners up spot with 3rd place going to Vet Joe Blackett making his debut in the race. In the ladies race Rachel Vincent retained her title after setting a new course record last year beating the ever present Karen Robertson into 2nd place. This was a particular pleasing performance for Rachel who is coming back to form after suffering injury in a serious fall while climbing in Scotland during the winter. Another notable performance was that of V70 Joe Garbarino who just keeps on getting faster.

Team prize in the men’s and women’s races deservedly went to NFR who turned up in great numbers. Thanks for your support.

Unfortunately the race organiser was unable to take part in the race due to recent surgery on a dodgy ankle, but maintained his form at the presentation of awards in the Moorcock Pub where once again all finishers were presented with prizes during intervals of laughter, heckling and much sarcasm.
