The 14th Forest Burn Fell Race, 9th August 2009

The race again attracted runners from far and wide, due perhaps to the increasing popularity of Northumberland as a holiday destination. As expected, the tussle for first place was between Jones and Horsley. Jones set the initial pace and led all the way until the top of Ward’s Hill after which Horsley established a small lead. However, Jones’ hill training had clearly worked as he took Horsley on the second ascent of Ward’s Hill. Jones further stretched his lead after Horsley stopped to adjust a course marker on the way back to the Forest Burn. But it was advantage to Horsley after Jones’ shoe came off in the mud by the burn, and he seized his chance to cross the line first. If Jones had not run a 10K race earlier that day it would surely have been a different name on the Chairman’s Cup! The women’s race was comfortably won by Sue Mitchell of Calder Valley, which completed a hat-trick of Northumberland show wins after she won at the Powburn and College Valley Shows the previous weekend. Thanks to Steve, Penny, Greg, Casper and Lanty.
