“Come to Harthope Valley and enjoy the glorious views” he said, ” come and spectate\u00a0 on a race which offers perhaps a\u00a0 unique opportunity to view the runners for 80% of the race” he said,\u00a0 (in the words of del boy “what a plonker”!) What I didn’t bargain for was the thick fog & dense low cloud which arrived dead on race day morning! However, 39 typical hardy fell running souls turned up. I decided to partially mark the course up to Housey Crags and from there it was a well defined track upto Hedgehope summit. After a quick safety brief the runners were off. They started on the road further down the valley. This was to allow the runners to string out and to try and prevent a bottle neck on the narrow bridge over the Hawsen Burn. From the bridge the runners were faced with the immediate climb, no gradual rise here! I am not sure who led upto the 1st climb, Housey Crags, then to the summit of Hedgehope but I know the lead changed many times between Andy Blackett, Bruce Crombie and Paul Rogan, (Forres Harriers).<\/p>\n
Confirmation from the NNPMRT marshals on the summit informed us that the runners were now on the fast descent & racing to the finish. It was here that Bruce Crombie produced a superb display. He opened up a gap and was the clear winner by some 23 secounds. Bruce had raced himself previous on this route as a recce finishing in 50 mins. So his new time and course record of 43.17 will take some beating.<\/p>\n
