{"id":2978,"date":"2017-10-02T10:28:19","date_gmt":"2017-10-02T10:28:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.northumberlandfellrunners.co.uk\/?p=2978"},"modified":"2017-10-02T10:28:19","modified_gmt":"2017-10-02T10:28:19","slug":"hodgson-relays","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.northumberlandfellrunners.co.uk\/?p=2978","title":{"rendered":"Hodgson Relays"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Hodgson Relays 2017<\/h4>\n<div style=\"width: 1210px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.northumberlandfellrunners.co.uk\/images\/racereportimages\/2017\/HodgsonRelays_JDuff.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.northumberlandfellrunners.co.uk\/images\/racereportimages\/2017\/HodgsonRelays_JDuff.jpg\" alt=\"photo: John\" width=\"1200\" height=\"814\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">photo: John<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Poor weather conditions meant this year&#8217;s Hodgson Relay was over a shortened route.\u00a0\u00a0 It was essentially an out and back course from Patterdale to Kirkstone via Hartsop.\u00a0 The high tops of High Street to the east and all the western route over Red Screes and Fairfield were omitted.\u00a0\u00a0 This was due to forecast low cloud, rain, and high winds.<\/p>\n<p>NFR ran well with no mishaps or poor route choices.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 John Tollitt and Matthew Briggs ran leg 1 from Patterdale to Hartsop via Angle Tarn.\u00a0 There was a mere 38 years age difference, and they were soon handing over to Roger Sillito and Scott Gibson for leg 2.\u00a0 Scott&#8217;s local knowledge was rewarded when they hit Caudale Moor Tarn spot on when others went walk-about.<\/p>\n<p>Kirkstone Pass was a cloudy and dreich affair with runners appearing out of the mist without warning.\u00a0\u00a0 Mark Clarkson and Andy Higgins took over the baton for leg 3.\u00a0 Despite no prior recce, they ran superbly and were soon running back into Hartsop having made up several places.\u00a0 Steph Scott &amp; I took over for the last leg back via Angle Tarn.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Even this leg was firmly in the clag.\u00a0 As we emerged from the mist at Boredale Hause, the finish PA system was sounding eerily over the valley.<\/p>\n<p>NFR finished 32nd overall.\u00a0\u00a0 Many thanks are due to the organisers\/marshals for their sterling work\u00a0 in putting the relay on in difficult conditions.\u00a0\u00a0 Also thanks to Jane &amp; Mike Briggs who provided support and invaluable transport on the day when parking was difficult.<\/p>\n<p>The Borrowdale hegemony has now been well and truly broken.\u00a0 This year the relay was won by Keswick AC.\u00a0 Their team included Chris Edis who ran for the north-east in the inter-counties, and Carl Bell.\u00a0 One of Carl&#8217;s early races was at Lakeland Country Fair &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northumberlandfellrunners.co.uk\/html\/racereports\/2010\/LakelandShow.html\" target=\"_blank\">click here<\/a>\u00a0if you want a walk down memory lane to see some youthful NFR faces &#8211;
