Chevy Chase

Conditions were mixed for the Chevy Chase. Heavy rain at the start gave way to drizzle and mist on the higher sections of the course. This allowed competitors to take a variety of routes between Cheviot and Hedgehope (not all entirely favourable – with some reporting an excursion to the boggy delights of Comb Fell). Towards the end, the mist cleared and the sun did come out, which meant it was a tad warm for the later finishers.

The race was won by Iain Twaddle (North Shields Poly) who vied for the lead with Phil Sanderson throughout the race. The lead changed handsĀ several times, before Iain made a decisive break on the climb up Hell Path. Cameron Murray (Carnethy) was next in.

I ran most of the way back from Hedgehope in splendid isolation. On the run up Carey Burn, I spied 3 runners ahead who were starting to slow. I managed to overtake them on the run in, to finish 4th. Paul Appleby had a good run, finishing 9th overall. John Tollitt was next in for NFR, securing the team prize for us.

There were many other notable runs including Nina Cameron who was second lady, the ever youthful Ray Gray who was first V70, and James Green who ran round with father Phil to complete his first Chevy then gallantly assisted with the prize giving.

All in all, it was a grand day out. Our thanks are due to Mary & Claire and everyone at Wooler Running Club who do an excellent job organising this fantastic race.
