Borrowdale Fell race 2016
The Borrowdale Fell Race was an English Championship counter this year, so all the top names were there. The list of “who’s who” was swelled by myself and Gary Mason. It was warm climbing Bessyboot, but after that there was a breeze and fair bit of cloud cover. So conditions were good for running.
The top of Scafell Pike was just in cloud, but it was no problem to find the top of the scree descent. It was more of a problem descending the screes, as they are now badly eroded and several runners ended up unceremoniously dumped on to their bum(bag)s. I survived the screes intact, and headed on to the Corridor Route. Here a Keswick runner took a fall and cut his head. I stopped to check he was OK, but couldn’t see where the cut was – despite a fair amount of blood on his head. As he was “walking wounded”, I legged it down to the Styhead checkpoint and reported him injured. Continue reading

- “Joe Garbarino fell and knocked himself out at the Beacon Race on thursday night. Paramedics attended and he was taken to hospital by the air ambulance. – The latest from Joe’s wife is that he is in good spirits in Cramlington hospital awaiting the fitting of a pacemaker, so hopefully he is going to be ok.”
Report on the Trail Verbier St Bernard from Henrietta Bolton Carter:
“I’ve picked up the baton to organise the Ian Hodgson and FRA relays [British Relay Championships] this year which will be held on Sunday 2 October and Saturday 15 October respectively.
The [Ian Hodgson] website still has last year’s details on it but is expected to be updated within the next week or so. One “Open” team of eight runners is sought for the Ian Hodgson. If more than eight names are put forward the best team will be selected based on recent race results.
Information on the FRA relays is scant at present but is going to be somewhere near Loch Lomond. This is a very sociable event and one to consider no matter what your ability. I’ll try and get as many teams as possible entered.
If you are interested in entering either race please could you let me know by the end of July.

“There was a great turnout for the 60th running of The Chevy Chase. Over 200 runners lined up at the start. It was a hard plod out to Cheviot into a strong westerly wind and through boggy conditions. But the clouds stayed high and the forecast heavy showers never arrived. It was a quick run back from Hedgehope with the wind on our backs. The sting in the tail was Careyburn where the runners turned into the wind. After that the climb up Hellpath didn’t seem too bad, and the wind blew runners home over Wooler Common.
John Butters had a tremendous run, pulling away from the chasing runners from Hedgehope onwards. He won by 5 minutes in 3 hours 3 mins. Gemma Bradley (Saltwell) won the ladies’ race. Karen Robertson was second lady and first LV40. There was strong representation from NFR throughout the field. We were first team (John B, myself, and Matthew Pearce). Paul Appleby won the walk. NFR B would have been third team. Jamie Wilkinson (formerly NFR before he emigrated to Australia) was awarded the Spirit of The Chevy for travelling from The Antipodes to run the race.
The prize-giving took place under pleasant sunshine in the hostel garden. Runners tucked into the post-race tea and sandwiches, while sporting their fetching blue Chevy T-shirts. The race was superbly organised as ever by Wooler Running Club with Mary and Claire at the helm. Many thanks!

“Congratulations to Club Secretary, John Telfer on his successful Bob Graham Round today. He’s pictured below with some of the motley crew that supported him, just after his return to Keswick Moot Hall approximately 23 hours and 20 minutes after leaving there on Friday night!

“104 runners competed this year’s WGFR in excellent conditions.
Andrew Robertshaw of Otley led from the first climb and his lead would have been greater apart from a few route choices. Just over the hour but will be no doubt back to try to get into the select sub hour club. Graham Simpson of Alnwick was second and fell running Newcomer Scott Ellis of North Shields Poly in third.
In the Women’s race, Emma Holt of Morpeth won with a top twenty finish , Katrina McDonald of Morpeth second and Third was Katherine Davis of North Shields Poly.
We raised over £420 for mountain rescue.
Only thing spoiling a good day was a primary watch failure, I have a back up which will give a complete timing.
Last year of the Barrowburn tearoom as well before Ian and Eunice retire.
